RISD Museum Visitor Guide
WEB & ILLUSTRATION | RISD Museum
Like many other institutions, the RISD Museum found itself rethinking and reenvisioning itself in 2020. One product of the COVID disruption was this digital Visitor Guide. Initially, it served to replace the paper maps that the pandemic had precluded. But the guide's utility beyond a pandemic stand-in quickly became apparent, as it aggregated our diverse and growing array of digital resources that connected with and supplemented the in-gallery experience. The guide has two overall parts: How to Visit and What’s on View. The first part details COVID protocols and general museum visiting tips and accessibility resources. The second part outlines the galleries and exhibitions on all six floors of the museum, leading to individual pages for each floor. On those pages, we include the galleries and exhibitions on that floor, a map, and all digital resources—videos, gallery guides, pdfs—associated with objects or shows on that floor. There are additional pages targeted specifically for students and faculty. (Currently it also links out to a visitor experience survey for the museum.)
I designed the site and built it on our digital publishing tool, Ziggurat. While primarily designed to be viewed on a mobile device, I made sure to structure the site so that it would be presentable on desktops as well. I also drew the majority of the illustrations that accompany the site.
