Social media animation commissioned for Design Observer’s 20th anniversary. Inspired by the logo’s use of roman numerals, I created a countdown-style animation. Roman numerals have great graphic qualities—geometry, repetition, simplicity—but from a systems standpoint they’re unnecessarily complex—their legibility is highly inconsistent, at least to contemporary eyes. Creating a fast-paced roman numeral countdown leans into those elements of repetition, geometry, and legibility, forming a playful pattern game.
